Fight for Mucha

The efforts to persuade Jan Mucha to stay at Legia have already involved the most important people in the club. Yesterday, the World Cup finalist of next year attended the headquarters of the ITI Group on the special invitation of Mariusz Walter. The president of the company that owns Legia tried to convince the Slovak to sign a new contract. His current deal expires in June next year.

Meeting with the boss
“The meeting? Wonderful, that’s all I can say. Talking with the president is a pleasure. What does the future hold for me? I don’t know. I have a few things to think over now; the decision will be difficult. There is a chance that I’ll sign a contract with Legia. We will definitely meet again,” said the star player of the Warsaw side. Both men agreed not to reveal details of the negotiations, but the Slovak left the ITI building surprised. The last offer he had received from Legia was already very good, guaranteeing around €250,000 per year plus bonuses. Yesterday he likely received an even better proposal. Hence his words that a tough decision awaits him.

“When I bought shares in the club, I declared that stars attract people to stadiums, and I want it to be the same in Legia’s case,” Walter said shortly after acquiring the club. But so far, the stars have rather been leaving Legia than coming to it. It’s high time to change that and at least start retaining them. In six months, the stadium at Lazienkowska will hold 27,000 people. Someone has to attract them to Legia’s matches – marketing alone won’t be enough. Especially since it was announced that the new ground should also mean building a strong team capable of competing in Europe. It’s hard to imagine a better candidate than Mucha. After yesterday’s meeting, the chances of Mucha staying in Warsaw increased, though for now his departure still seems more likely.

The goalkeeper’s agent Jozef Tokos is in talks with more than a dozen clubs interested in bringing in the Slovak international. He has agreed with Legia’s management that if someone offers €500,000, Mucha will be allowed to leave. Hannover 96 and Rennes are among the clubs able to pay such an amount. “I don’t talk with anyone, because I have a contract with Legia. And my agent? Well, I can’t forbid him,” said Mucha.
