Slovak football will have its first goalkeeper in the richest league competition in the world, the English Premier League. The renowned British daily The Times has already confirmed the Economic Daily’s report from last week that Slovakia’s No. 1, Ján Mucha, will become a player of Liverpool’s Everton from the summer. He should join the traditional English club on a free transfer. He signed a three-year contract and in the city of the Beatles will play alongside his compatriot at rival Liverpool FC, Martin Skrtel. Mucha is the first Slovak to benefit from the national team’s historic qualification for the World Cup. And according to his agent, certainly not the last. “Thanks to the success of the national team, other Slovaks will also improve their position in Europe, Janko is the first example,” said Jozef Tokos, agent of Legia Warsaw’s still-current goalkeeper, for the Economic Daily.

Experts we spoke to agree that they see similarities between our players’ transfers and what Czechia experienced 14 years ago. “The success of our national team definitely helped us, the same happened with our western neighbors after their qualification and second place at EURO 1996. It triggered a wave of transfers and unprecedented movement on the Czech football market,” said Tokos. Within one year back then, one Czech after another was changing shirts – Karel Poborsky to Manchester United, Pavel Nedved to Lazio Rome, and goalkeeper Petr Kouba to Spain’s Deportivo La Coruna. “Something similar could happen this year with Slovaks. Of course, what will be very important is a successful performance in South Africa,” added Tokos. (...)
