On June 5, Everton’s club website announced that contracts of three members of the Toffees’ squad would expire on the last day of the sixth month – Phil Neville, Thomas Hitzlsperger, and Jan Mucha. That was the same day the club’s management officially confirmed the arrival of coach Roberto Martinez, the successor to David Moyes, who had been lured away by Manchester United.

“And that is all that is relevant for us to say about the whole matter,” said Mucha’s agent Jozef Tokos yesterday. “The fact that Jan’s contract expires on June 30 is publicly known. Just as well-known is our position: first of all, the coaching question at Everton must be clarified, and then we can have discussions with the competent person about the player’s future. At the moment Mucha is on holiday, still as an Everton player, and after his return we will negotiate. It would be premature to speak about the outcome now.”

The truth is that since his arrival at Everton in the summer of 2010, Mucha has not played much. But it is also true that it was Martinez, then manager of Wigan, who once tried to bring him in. Tokos did not want to play the percentages game about the chances of the goalkeeper staying or leaving Liverpool.
