Once considered an outsider in England’s second-tier football league and operating on an annual budget of under 14 million euros, Huddersfield Town has now hit the football jackpot. In what is often described as the most lucrative match in the world, Huddersfield defeated Reading on penalties to secure promotion to the Premier League. The club will return to England’s top flight after a 45-year absence.
According to the Associated Press, playing in the upcoming season of the world’s richest league is expected to bring the club nearly 200 million euros.
“It’s a small miracle that Huddersfield will play among the elite. They'll earn even more than the winner of the prestigious Champions League,” sports analyst Jozef Tokos told the Economic Daily.
For comparison, Real Madrid earned “only” a little over 80 million euros for last year’s Champions League title.
