The group of experts prepared a project about the reform of funding of the Slovak sport. They want the public discussion about it.

On Friday the team of the Prime Minister presented a project Victory that contains suggestions for development and popularization of sport in Slovakia. The group of experts –comprises Jozef Tokoš, the adviser to the Prime Minister and the leader of the team, Eugen Jurzyca, the head of the Institute for Economic and Social Reforms (INEKO), Peter Goliaš, analyst in the Institute for Economic and Social Reforms (INEKO), Igor Moška, Secretary General of the Slovak Tennis Association. They would like to fulfill three main objectives of the reform: to attract the highest possible number of young people to sport, to reach the highest possible number of significant international successes, promotion of sport as a desirable way of entertainment. The authors would firstly like to change the current system of funding of sport. They suggest to define known and transparent rules for allocating donations from public resources. They also suggest to evaluate particular projects and sports according to the effectiveness of use of public funds and successes of sports according to a wide spectrum of criteria. Based on this evaluation, a list of sports should be set up; the state would specially support those sports that are most successful. The team also suggests to increase the funding of youth sports from current 1,4% to 33% of the whole budget, the money should be taken from the central support of “sports for all” and material investment. “Our initial aim was to finish project in the year of 2005 and to continue with the implementation this year. Early election stopped our plans. We would be very glad, if our suggestions were discussed by experts, also in the public. This topic should get into awareness of people. It is necessary to stress that the majority of proposed measures can be realized without necessary legal changes. We don’t want politics to influence our project in a negative way so that it becomes a part of election fight,” said Jozef Tokoš. Eugen Jurzyca added: “It is very important to start to evaluate contributions of particular sports for the society according to criteria known in advance, such as successes, popularity of sport at home and abroad and others. We realize that this system can be negative for someone. However, I was surprised there were more-less positive reactions while discussing the project with the people involved.” All the important information about the project Victory can be found on the web side: www.reformasportu.sk
